The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (BMB) at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) was a awarded a grant by the US Department of Education for the Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need (GAANN) Fellowship Program.

Purpose

Graduate training in structural biology and biophysics (SB+B) is available through the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (BMB) at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC). SB+B applies the principles and techniques of biology, chemistry, computer science, physics and mathematics, to elucidate the governing forces and structures of biological macromolecules, supra-molecular structures, organelles, and cells. State-of-the-art facilities for Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), X-ray crystallography, thermodynamics, atomic force microscopy, analytical ultracentrifugation, surface plasmon resonance, light scattering and mass spectroscopy are available. These are the tools necessary to achieve cutting-edge advances in discovery.

The overall GAANN project goal is to provide a diverse group of doctoral candidates the training needed to develop as independent investigators in SB+B. They will become professors who lead successful research programs and will pass on their training by effectively recruiting and teaching their own students.

Traditionally underrepresented students are especially encouraged to apply.
